Who?
Me? Procrastinate? Maybe ...
Perhaps
you've been procrastinating about getting out for that morning walk, or
going to the gym? Or going dancing?
To
procrastinate is to waver between thinking about doing something, and
then thinking you won't do it.
So you keep putting off whatever it
is and probably don't do much! If that sounds convoluted, imagine
how it feels.
For
example, you think about doing the dishes, and instantly you imagine it
will take forever, that it will be hard, that really you feel quite
comfortable in your TV chair, that you'd enjoy a TV show more, and so
on. What happened?
1.
You created an image that had a negative feel to it - dishes piled high,
the clock ticking, and that little voice (your subconscious child)
whispered in that sulky voice "I don't feel like doing the
dishes."
2.
You then flashed to doing other things that were much more inviting, so
now you have an image of being in your comfy recliner, ah, that feels
good, or talking to your friend on the phone (friends make us feel very
good) or some other equally pleasant alternative.
3.
You didn't do what you needed to, and later you berate yourself and ask "Why?
Why didn't I just do the dishes?" And when you do the
dishes, you take half as much time as you anticipated, and actually it
feels good to play in that warm soapy water....
The
funny thing was that you didn't give yourself an image of enjoying
yourself as you play in the warm soapy water at Step 1, and nor did you
imagine congratulating yourself for a job well done when you'd finished,
so that the sounds you heard were happy, and so that you felt good while
doing the dishes.
Procrastination
is a strategy for self-sabotage
Procrastination
is merely a strategy, and it will sabotage you. Learning how to
change the strategy will remove indecision and doubt from your
life.
Simply,
learning to put positive images, sounds and feeling in your mind's eye,
to motivate and guide yourself will give a new strategy that supports
and encourages you to enjoy being productive.
After
all, when you want a child to get up in the morning, do you say to your
child, "Wake up sleepy head, it's freezing out, so rug
up." Of course not!
Positive
Self-Talk
You
say, "Wake up gorgeous, we've got lots of fun things to do
today. That's Fun with laughs and friends and happy times!
Race you to the bathroom!"
Give
this approach your disciplined effort and you'll soon have lost
procrastination and become the champion of "I do it now!" Talk to yourself,
fill your head with positive images, and feel great!
Of
course, if you need help, there's a few more processes you can go
through in a session, and there can be other reasons that stop you from
making this work, like depression, anxiety and stress, or lack of
self-confidence. The thing is, that help is available.
